"Across three states, Jenny was hands-down the best divorce lawyer I worked with! Authentic, savvy, insightful, tough, empathetic and effective. Can ’t say enough good things about her."
Breann Burns’ arrival as Triangle Smart Divorce’s newest attorney was, well, unique. Unprecedented. Extraordinary.
Over the years, we’ve built our amazing team by running our famous (or infamous, depending on one’s perspective) job searches. This has included referrals from friends and family, waiting years for professionals we’ve admired to finally be in a position to join us, and even recruiting outstanding ‘prospects’ that clearly were being wasted on another team’s bench.
If that sounds a lot like the building of a dynastic sports franchise, it’s only because it’s almost exactly like that.
This, though, has never happened in all our company building: Breann was referred to us by one of her law school professors. A “you really need to talk to this woman” phone call.
When this happens – again, rarely – it’s either because it’s the plot of a John Grisham novel or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, like the Boston Celtics scooping up Larry Bird before the NBA draft.
We ruled the first out almost immediately – Breann interviewed much better than Tom Cruise did as Mitch McDeere. So, what made the second scenario come true? Well, start with this: Breann grew up in Upstate New York smack dab in the snowbelt. That area near Lake Ontario that gets feet of lake-effect snow while everyone else gets a dusting.
Somehow, in the few days it wasn’t snowing or below freezing, Breann became one of NYS’s top hurdlers and was recruited by the University of Rhode Island’s Division 1 Women’s Track & Field team. Not only did Breann master the hurdles, but she also became a captain of the URI team as well as a Student-Athlete Orientation Leader.
Combine those attributes with her outstanding record at Campbell Law School, which included all-star caliber performances in Mock Trial and Moot Court competitions, and her experience as a legal intern and assistant while in school, and it’s easy to see why her professor reached out to us.
Breann thrives working with people and is skilled in coaching and mentoring. It’s why she gravitated toward a career in family law. We are glad she did.
After the snow of Pulaski, New York, and the wind chills of Narragansett Bay, Breann is thrilled to be in North Carolina, where she enjoys walks outside, Peloton, and Pilates. She has understandably retired from running.
