Cameron Marks likes figuring out how the pieces fit together. 

Sometimes those pieces are financial records in a divorce. Sometimes they are the facts of a case that don’t quite make sense until you look a little closer. And sometimes they are several thousand tiny pieces of plastic that will eventually become Hogwarts. 

We’ll get to that. 

Cameron grew up in Arizona and attended the University of Arizona, where an undergraduate internship at a family law firm changed the direction of her career. She liked the pace. She liked that no two days or families were exactly the same. But most of all, she liked being able to see the work actually make a difference. 

As Cameron sees it, most areas of law involve helping people in some way. Family law is different because you often get to see that help happening in real time. You meet a Client when they are trying to figure out what comes next, work alongside them through the decisions and complications in the middle, and eventually get to see them reach the other side. 

That was enough to send Cameron east for law school. 

At Campbell Law, she took just about every opportunity she could to see family law from a different angle. She worked in the Gailor Family Law Litigation Clinic, externed with a family court judge, and spent time learning how cases moved from the first problem all the way through resolution. 

Then Cameron came to Triangle Smart Divorce as a law clerk the summer before her final year of law school. She came to get hands-on experience with the work she already knew she wanted to do, and she got plenty of it. Along the way, we got the chance to see how Cameron worked, thought, and fit with the Team. 

We liked what we saw enough that we offered her an attorney position before she even went back for her final year.  

Apparently, the summer clerkship worked out pretty well for everyone. 

Today, Cameron works with TSD Clients across the Triangle primarily on divorce and separation agreements, along with the financial and practical questions that come with untangling two lives. She particularly enjoys the cases where the answer isn’t immediately obvious and she gets to dig into the details, follow the money, and figure out how the pieces fit together. 

That attention to detail comes in handy with separation agreements, too. A good agreement isn’t simply about getting something signed. It is about thinking through how the decisions being made today are actually going to work tomorrow, where problems could arise, and whether everyone understands what they are agreeing to before they agree to it. 

Cameron also works alongside the other family law attorneys on the TSD Team on a broader range of family law matters. She is always looking for the next opportunity to expand what she knows, whether that means digging into a new legal issue, seeing how another attorney approaches a difficult case, or asking the question that gets everyone looking at the problem a little differently. 

Family law gives her plenty to work with. It moves quickly, rarely repeats itself, and requires her to shift between the legal, financial, and very human pieces of a case. 

That’s exactly what Cameron likes about it. 

Which brings us back to those several thousand pieces of plastic. 

Cameron is serious about LEGO. Specifically, intricate Harry Potter LEGO sets, the kind that requires a substantial commitment of time, attention, and presumably available surface area. After spending her workday figuring out how the pieces of a family law case fit together, Cameron apparently likes to unwind by figuring out how entirely different pieces fit together. 

At least the LEGO ones come with instructions. 

When she isn’t building Hogwarts, Cameron keeps up with Reese’s Book Club and spends time with her dog, Boots. And while college sports loyalties can become a surprisingly serious matter around the TSD office, Cameron mostly stays out of it. She’ll root for Arizona basketball, but when UNC, Duke, and NC State start arguing, she has the rare luxury of having no dog in the fight. 

Cameron took the scenic route from Arizona to North Carolina, but the thing that drew her to family law in the first place hasn’t changed. She likes being there for the whole journey, helping Clients sort through the pieces in front of them and seeing where they end up on the other side. 

Turns out, she’s pretty good at putting things together.
