There isn’t much that rattles Katie Kober. 

A business that needs to be valued in the middle of a divorce? Let’s look at the numbers. Separate and marital property that have been mixed together for years? Start untangling it. Military retirement benefits with their own set of rules? Figure out which ones apply. 

Katie likes numbers. She likes complicated problems. And after more than a decade practicing family law, she has found that the two tend to find each other. 

Katie knew from the beginning that she wanted to practice law somewhere she could actually know her Clients. A massive firm where people became case numbers was never particularly appealing. She wanted to work directly with people, help them through difficult transitions, and be able to see the difference her work was making. 

She started her career at a North Carolina firm handling both criminal and family law. A move to Alabama took her to a practice devoted exclusively to family law, and that was when things clicked. Family law had the combination Katie was looking for: people, problems, variety, and plenty to think about. 

She hasn’t looked back. 

Over the years, Katie has handled just about every kind of family law matter, but she particularly enjoys the financial side of divorce. She has significant experience representing business owners and Clients with substantial assets in cases involving business valuations, high-net-worth estates, and complicated questions about marital and separate property. 

These are cases where liking numbers comes in handy. Katie enjoys digging into financial records, understanding how a business fits into the larger picture, and figuring out what is actually going on when the finances aren’t particularly straightforward. 

She also has extensive experience with military divorce, including negotiating military benefits available to former spouses and preparing Military Pension Division Orders. Military retirement and benefits bring their own rules to an already complicated process, and Katie knows how to work through them. 

And through all of it, she remains remarkably matter-of-fact. 

That’s useful in family law. Clients don’t generally come to us because everything is going according to plan. When the finances are complicated, the stakes are high, or the other side has just done something particularly unhelpful, adding more panic to the situation doesn’t accomplish much. 

Katie would rather figure out what happened, what matters, and what we’re going to do about it. 

That approach is also part of what brought her to Triangle Smart Divorce. Katie wanted the collaboration and support of a Team environment. Complicated cases benefit from having smart people around who are willing to ask questions, challenge an idea, share what they know, and help each other find the best path forward. 

It’s one of the things she appreciates most about practicing at TSD. 

Katie’s work has also earned recognition from the legal community, including selections to North Carolina Super Lawyers Rising Stars and recognition by Best Lawyers for her work in family law. Those honors are nice. Katie is probably more interested in getting back to the case in front of her. 

Outside the office, Katie’s schedule doesn’t necessarily get less complicated. She has three kids, which means a significant amount of her time is spent at cheerleading, football, and lacrosse. 

There is also the question of college sports. 

Katie went to East Carolina University before earning her law degree at UNC, and if she has to pick a side, she’ll root for ECU. Mostly, though, she’s happy to let the UNC, Duke, and NC State factions of the TSD Team fight this one out among themselves. 

Which means she can watch the rest of the office argue about North Carolina college sports with the calm detachment of someone who, once again, is not particularly rattled. 

Whether she’s sorting through a business valuation, tracing property, working through the details of military retirement, or helping a Client figure out what comes next, Katie approaches the problem much the same way. 

Look at the facts. Look at the numbers. Figure out what matters. 

Then get to work.
