Jessica Miller
Overview
When Jessica Miller first came to Triangle Smart Divorce, we hired her to take care of our Clients. Somewhere along the way, we realized she was pretty good at taking care of the rest of us, too.
Jessica originally joined TSD in 2021 as a Client Care Coordinator after spending ten years in Child Welfare, beginning as an investigator and eventually supervising a Team. She had spent a decade helping families through incredibly stressful situations, solving problems that rarely came with easy answers, and learning how to meet people where they are. It made her a natural fit for the person often having the very first conversation with someone considering divorce.
And she was really good at it.
Over time, Jessica took on more. She learned TSD from just about every angle, became a leader within the Team, and developed the kind of institutional knowledge that is hard to put into a job description. She knows how our systems work, where they can work better, what our Team needs to do their jobs well, and, most importantly, how all of those behind-the-scenes decisions ultimately affect our Clients.
So when TSD found itself needing a Director of Operations again, we knew exactly the kind of person we needed. As it turns out, she was already here.
Jessica finally agreed to take the job, and we genuinely could not think of anyone better suited for it. Today, she has a hand in just about everything that keeps Triangle Smart Divorce moving. She works behind the scenes on our systems, processes, technology, Team development, and the countless problems that inevitably pop up when you’re running a growing family law firm. Most Clients may never see everything Jessica does for them, and that is kind of the point. Her job is to make sure the TSD Team has what it needs to take great care of families navigating divorce and other family law matters across the Triangle.
Jessica’s leadership style has a lot in common with the way she worked with families earlier in her career. She listens. She pays attention. She meets people where they are. And then she starts figuring out how to make things better. She’s not particularly interested in doing something a certain way just because “that’s how we’ve always done it,” which, fortunately, works pretty well at a firm with “Smart” in the name.
There’s also a reason Jessica has continued to grow her career here. When TSD was named one of the Triangle Business Journal’s Best Places to Work, Jessica summed it up better than we could: “I love where I work and the amazing humans I get to work with. Being part of a place where people genuinely care about each other and the work we do makes all the difference.” As Director of Operations, she now gets to play a big part in making sure those humans have the support, systems, and resources they need to keep doing that work well.
Of course, genuinely caring about her fellow Team members does not mean Jessica is willing to support all of their life choices, particularly when it comes to college sports. She is a very committed ECU Pirate and loves a good tailgate. While much of the office gets caught up in the UNC versus NC State debate, Jessica is perfectly happy cheering against both sides. Around here, purple and gold may actually be the closest thing we have to neutral territory.
At home, Jessica and her husband, Michael, have a blended family with three children, a dog named Luna, and a Bearded Dragon named Geico. It remains unclear whether Geico has secured the family any sort of car insurance discount.
When Jessica does manage to get some time to herself, you can usually find her reading or enjoying a spicy margarita on the front patio with Michael, preferably with nowhere to be and, perhaps more importantly, nobody needing anything from her.
With three kids, a dog, and a Bearded Dragon, she recognizes this is an ambitious request.
A lot has changed since Jessica first walked through TSD’s doors, including her title and the number of things that somehow find their way onto her plate. What hasn’t changed is what made her such a good fit in the first place: she cares about people, she knows how to solve problems, and she wants to leave things better than she found them. These days, she gets to do that for our Clients, our Team, and the firm as a whole.
